A spinning reel is a popular device which is used for fishing and is owned by a majority of the fishers who use hook and line for fishing. They have a fixed spool to which line is deposited by revolving a guide called bail. They can accommodate monofilament lines and the newer fluorocarbon lines.
The spinning reels today come with the best-performing qualities and durability. They are resistant to catch even the fishes of bigger sizes. Before taking your spinning reel out for fishing, it is essential that you know how does it work.
The article below will let you know about the essential components of the spinning reel along with describing the simple working mechanism briefly. Let’s get started.
What are the things to know about a spinning reel?
The spinning reel consists of the following parts.
It is a part of the reel which helps in holding the line. They vary in size and amount of the line they can hold.
The line capacity of one spinning reel will not be the same as that of the other. It is therefore ,necessary to know how many lines to put on your spinning reel. If you note the front part of the fishing reel most of it is mentioned with the line capacity
It helps in making the weight get distributed evenly when in lining the reel.
It is a mechanism which prevents the unwrapping of the line from the spool. It can be either open or closed. The open bail allows the line to come off from the spool whereas the closed bail prevents it from coming off.
It helps in retrieving the line back to the spool.
Upon turning the handle the reel engages the gear which in turn turns the shaft on the spool. Higher the gear ratio, faster the bait retrieves.
They help in ensuring a smooth running of the spool. The greater the bearings, the smoother the running.
It is when the handle does not turn backward when the line is pulled from the reel as the drag is used. It is featured as an on/off lever in the spinning reel.
This is the handle of the reel designed to crank the line into the reel. They can be either single griped or double griped.
How does a spinning reel work?
It works on a simple mechanism. The line passes through a rotor which spins around a fixed spool thereby wrapping the line as it goes. In order to lay the line evenly, the spool is mounted on a shaft that moves up and down with the spinning of the spool. Upon lifting the bail wire mounted on the motor and by holding the line in place with the index finger and the thumb, casting is made.
After casting, the bail wire is closed with the line under it and the rotor helps in laying the line on the spool again. The drag system or the drag brake is nothing but a series of carbon fiber and steel washers located on top of the line spool. Upon tightening the washers together the spool gets squeezed against the top of the spool shaft and hence the spool becomes difficult to turn.
